A little follow-up to a post that certainly got more attention than we ever expected... A few days ago, we shared a photo of visitors from Michigan who posted that they were heading to Halifax wearing their "Lake America" sweatshirts. It was apparently intended as a joke. However, judging by the reaction, including more than 160,000 views of our post and over 900 comments, it's probably fair to say that a lot of Canadians didn't find it particularly funny, including us. We have since seen an apology from one of the ladies in the photo, acknowledging that the post didn't come across as intended. We appreciate that. But we also wanted to explain why we chose to respond the way we did. Canada and the United States have been neighbours, friends and allies for generations. Our families cross the border. We vacation in each other's countries. We do business together. And when one of us has needed the other, more often than not, we've been there. Somewhere along the way lately, things have become a little more complicated. And, like a lot of Canadians, we're sometimes left wondering how we got here. But we don't think the answer is more anger. We think it's kindness. Conversation. A little understanding. And maybe occasionally being willing to listen to why something that seems funny on one side of the border might not feel quite as funny on the other. That's why our message to our American visitors wasn't "go home." It was... "Welcome to Nova Scotia. Come meet us. Enjoy our province. Have some lobster. Experience our hospitality. And maybe we'll understand each other a little better when it's all over" We archived our original post after it travelled much farther than we ever imagined. We think it made its point. Now we'd rather leave this story with a different one: Neighbours don't always agree. Friends don't always get it right. But kindness and communication are still a pretty good place to start!
